1. Anna Lindstrom, daughter of John Lindstrom and Anna Johanna Michaelsdotter, was born on 25 Nov 1899 in Stafford, Roseau County, Minnesota, USA, died on 5 Mar 1974 in Deer Ridge, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was buried on 9 Mar 1974 in Deer Ridge, Saskatchewan, Canada. The cause of her death was heart attack. Other names for Anna were Anne, Annie Anderson, Annie Johnson Anderson, Annie Ecklund, Anna Johnson, Annie Johnson, Anna Johnston, Anna Johanna Szell, and Annie Szell.

General Notes: "Granny [Anna Lindstrom, 1899-1974] and Great Granny [Anna Johanna Johnson, 1865-1963] gave us the palt recipe; however, when granny made it, she never added meat - maybe because they only had potatoes in those days. Potatoes were filling and they didn't cost much more than hard labour. They called it Depression food." - Jeannette Anderson

Palt recipe:
- Grated potatoes and enough flour to make a dough that can be shaped into balls
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Crispy fried bacon in small pieces

Grate the potatoes and let them drain. Mix all ingredients, except the meat. Sprinkle hands with flour and make balls the size of tennis balls. Make a hole with 2 fingers in the middle of each ball and place 1 Tbsp fried bacon in it. Cover the hole well and place the balls carefully in a large pot of boiling, salted water, letting them cook until they float (approximately 50 min.). Stir carefully once in a while so they don't get stuck to the bottom of the pot. When they're ready, cut them into pieces and eat with salted butter. Leftovers can be re-heated in water or sliced up and fried.

Medical Notes: She had a heart attack while playing poker with her best friend. She had had mini attacks before that.

AYLSHAM, Sask. (CP) - Mrs. Anna Johanna Johnson, who is about five feet tall and weighs 100 pounds, saws and splits her own firewood. She reads Swedish newspapers, knits and smokes a corncob pipe. For Mrs. Johnson, who homesteaded at Kinistino in 1903, this is retirement. She is 93. Mother of five children, she operated a large farm. There were more than 90 head of cattle in 1913. She now lives in a small house on her grandson's land."

"Granny [Annie Lindstrom, 1899-1974] and Great Granny [Anna Johanna Johnson, 1865-1963] gave us the palt recipe; however, when granny made it, she never added meat - maybe because they only had potatoes in those days. Potatoes were filling and they didn't cost much more than hard labour. They called it Depression food."

Spruce Township
In 1888, the land now occupied by the Oak Manor Trailer Court east of Roseau was the homestead of fifty-six year old Mikkel Johnson and his wife Karolina. They had come to Spruce township from Sweden via Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Their seven older children, August, Robert, Emma, Jonas, Eva, Johanna and Agatha had remained in Sweden, when their parents immigrated in 1883. Mikkel walked from Pelican Rapids to Roseau - one hundred and fifty miles to select a claim site. Then he walked the fifty miles to Hallock to file his claim. From there he returned on foot to Pelican Rapids, another one hundred and forty miles to gather his wife Karolina, their five younger children, Huldah, Alex, Nils Oscar, Josephine and Peter, and their belongings which were transported by ox team. Extra cattle were driven alongside.
The Johnson's new home, built of logs and covered with drop siding, was located near Section 16, which, as other townships, was reserved for school land. The present airport is located on "school land" now.
The Johnson's homestead was situated along the Indian trail which followed the higher ground to Warroad; the canoe trail went through the lower swampy areas. Sometimes in the evening the homesteader's door would open silently, a brown hand holding a fish would be extended through the opening. Mikkel would arise and accept the fish as a sign of welcome. The Indian chief, his wives and children would enter silently, seat themselves in a line against the walls to rest for the night. The horse that pulled the travois was stabled and fed. Early the next morning, the Johnsons peeped down throught the cracks in the loft floor to see the visitors departing as unceremoniously as they had come.

Örträskfinna [settler in Örträsk, Sweden; born in Finland]

Mårdbergslandet [också kallat Örträsklandet]
