• Anecdote: Told to Solveig Anderson, 30 Mar 1992, Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada. "We used to have a dog - just like a police dog. When Esther and I were kids out chasing gophers, we would pour a bucket of water down the gopher hole while our dog would guard the other hole. When the gopher came running out, the dog would catch it and we would run screaming to the house. When Mom came out, she would chop the tail off the gopher and give it to us. We were too scared to do it. That's the way we used to get our gopher tails."

Background information:
"The Social Credit government implemented a penny bounty per gopher tail in the 1930s. Many school teachers were responsible for signing the declaration forms. Students brought in gopher tails in little bags to the school to be counted. What a "stench"! Some teachers never opened the bags. Whatever number the boys claimed was good enough. Sometimes each tail had been multiplied into more than one part."
